Chapter

Eight

After Nash’s third mai tai tiki he wasn’t feeling quite so sore.

He, Eva and Bishop lounged poolside at the Song Saa private island resort in Cambodia. He had to admit, there were worse places on the planet to be.

He did his best to ignore the ugly purple bruise up the left side of his body, though he’d received a few sideways glances from fellow hotel guests. Bishop was worse. They’d extracted two bullets from his thigh and upper arm, and Eva had patched him up as best she could before they’d escaped via a rumble seat on a transport plane out of Seoul. They’d needed to put some distance between them and Pinchot while remaining close enough that they had an opportunity to recover without flying all the way home. The five-star resort was a suitable compromise.

The idea was for them to recuperate, but Nash’s mind was consumed with plans and counter plans for how to deal with Tartarus. He’d hounded Eva and Bishop to rest, but was incapable of taking his own advice. At this stage of his life Nash was meant to be retired, and well and truly out of the business. But here he was, embroiled in the most important and potentially globally damaging mission he’d ever been on. His body had to recover if they were to have any chance of winning the oncoming fight, but his mind refused to unwind. The mai tais were helping though.

Almost the second Nash’s mind finally granted him a momentary respite from his endless stratagems, his burner phone beeped. It was Harry. She needed to talk. Now.

Ten minutes later the team was huddled around a laptop in Nash’s hotel room when Harry’s face materialised. She was in her server room, surrounded by flickering lights from banks of servers. Hers was not a happy face.

“What the hell have you gotten me mixed up with?”

“I… I though you knew,” Nash stammered. “We are trying to take down—”

Harry cut him short with a wave of her hand. “These bastards aren’t hiding anymore, Nash. They’re coming out in the open and are more brazen, reckless even. They’re making a play, and the world’s not ready for them.”

“Why? What’s changed?”

Holding up a single finger, Harry replied, “I’ll get to that.”

Harry explained how she’d squirrelled into Pinchot’s phone and searched his private correspondence. She’d used his saved passwords to access online files and anything else she could. Even draft messages he would have thought deleted were uncovered by Harry’s genius. However, the woman didn’t seem as smug as she usually did after flexing her extensive skills. There was an emotion in her expression Nash had never seen before. She was scared.

“Is there anything about Paul?” Eva voiced the question they all wanted to ask.

Harry solemnly shook her head. “Given the brief you guys gave me, that was the first thing I searched for. There were a few messages referring to a package being picked up, the same day he went missing, so I assumed that was him but it could be anything really.
